How to get to Era Hotel
The easiest way to get to Era Hotel is to fly to Dalaman airport direct from England. Flight time from most of the major airports in England is about 4 hours. Most of the larger holiday companies operate charter flights from May to October and you can often benefit from good deals if you book in advance. Transfer time from Dalaman to Hisaronu, where the hotel is situated, takes approximately 45 minutes covering a distance of only 52km.
Alternatively, you can use scheduled flights although this does take longer. Turkish Airlines fly from Manchester and London via Istanbul.
Ovacik, Hisaronu and Fethiye
Ovacik: Against the dramatic backdrop of the Babadag or Mendos mountain providing beautiful mountain and forest views, Era Hotel overlooks the small village of Ovacik. Ovacik means ‘little plain’ and for the holiday maker that in turn means that you can enjoy cool sea and mountain breezes all year round.
Hisaronu: Ovacik is very near the centre of the resort Hisaronu, a busy village which boasts a number of good quality, authentic Turkish souvenir shops as well as a number of bars and restaurants to suit all moods and tastes. Food ranges from traditional Turkish to Chinese and Mexican. And for the less adventurous, you can easily find traditional English food and enjoy a pint in the many bars.
Fethiye: Less than 10km from Ovacik and Hisaronu is the bustling harbour town of Fethiye. Access to the town is easy by car, taxi or the local dolmus (mini bus)
In ancient times the area from the Dalaman Stream in the west to Phaselis near Antalya was called Lycia. Lycians had a notorious love of freedom and independence. Lycia has been described as a kind of open air museum, immersed in history and historical artefacts. The town gets its name from Telmessos, the son of the god Apollo. Fethiye is situated on the slopes of Babadag (ancient name Mendos) Mountain and because it is a harbour town now represents the centre of excursion for western Lycia. That means that you can enjoy a number of boat trips to the surrounding coves and 12 islands, or travel by land to visit nearby ancient cities. Fethiye is a main port for Gulet trips, wooden Byzantine yachts which accommodate up to 12 people who are guaranteed the most relaxing and breathtaking excursion of their lifetime.
Every week there is a huge market bazaar in the centre of the town selling herbs and spices, fruit, vegetables, fabric and leather. Or you can visit on any day of the week to walk by the harbour, visit restaurants where you can eat freshly caught fish, sample a glass of Turkish cay or watch the fishermen mend their nets. All banking facilities are available amidst a range of boutiques, bars and restaurants. You will find that English is a common language, as Fethiye is not only a popular tourist destination but increasingly many English tourists are buying their own property here.
Surrounding Villages
The villages surrounding Ovacik provide interesting locations for short excursions which you can organise yourself. We recommend that you visit Kaya Koy or "Peace Village" to see the 2000 Ottoman Greek houses deserted after World War 1. If you walk to the top of the town you can see the two prominent churches of Panayia Pirgiotissa and Taxiarhis, and enjoy some stunning views of Oludeniz bay. Or 10km in the opposite direction will take you to Uzumlu which literally means grape. Here you can sample authentic and undisturbed Turkish village life amongst the vines and tobacco fields.
If you are touring the area you can also visit Xanthos, Letoon, Pinara, Tlos, Sdyma, Myra and Simena. You will be able to find arranged excursions to all of these.
Beaches
There are many beaches in the immediate area, all of which are easily accessible. We suggest the following for variety:
The nearest beach to Era Hotel is Oludeniz, Oludeniz is a lagoon separated from the sea by a sandbank and is surrounded by pine and myrtle.
You can also visit Gemiler beach, a secluded cove from where you overlook and can visit St Nicholas island.
Patara beach, reputedly used in the film ‘Lawrence of Arabia’, is a massive expanse of golden sand lapped by shallow and cool water. If you enjoy kite-flying then this is an ideal location for you.
Calis is a sandy beach near Fethiye town centre, fantastic for experiencing the sun set or watching boats enter and leave the harbour.
